History of literature is the historical development of writings which attempts to provide entertainment to the readers as well as to enlighten them. One of the examples of literature that leaves a great impact of history to the world was Greek, Roman and Medieval literature. Greek and Roman literature is wide and includes tragedies, comedies, poems and epics. In Greek literature, their tragedies were mythological stories. The Greek tragedy talked about conflicts involving religious, moral and political issues. While Roman tragedies showed Roman historical characters. The Roman tragedy inherited from Greek tragedy that showed masks and costumes as well as musical-rhythm structure. The Roman literature had more emphasis on unifying law and more success in developing institutions for empire. In comparison to medieval literature, it is composed of fictional works of chivalry and adventure from middle ages. The ancient Roman and Greek civilizations had well-organized political processes that greatly influence the manner of governments. The Medieval invasions shaped the English language irrevocably and change the Britain’s formerly Anglo-Saxon culture. Modern and Contemporary literature was part of Medieval literature because this literature is a broad subject, encompassing essentially all written works of Europe and beyond during the middle ages. Just as in modern literature, it is a complex and rich field of the study. The literature of this time was composed of religious writings as well as secular works. Works of literature are often grouped by place of origin, language and genre.
ReplyDeleteIn Greek and Roman literature, they create such epic stories with some myths on it. The literature on Greeks and Romans focus on their mythological features such as Zeus, Jupiter, Poseidon, Neptune, Hades, Pluto and so many mythological personalities. Mostly of the themes of the Greek and Roman literatures were epics of the myths. In contrast to Medieval literature, mostly of the themes were influenced by the church, they were allegorical, they contain such chivalries and romances and some revenge and forgiveness of the main character of the story. The writers tend to make a story with a characters who were popular back then like Homer and other philosophers used by Dante Alghieri as a characters on his first book of the Divine Comedy, "Inferno". The story aims to tell us epics but the characters were not mythological unlike in Greek and Roman literature but the main characters were well known personalities like Rodrigo Salvador as Roland in the story "The Song of Roland".
ReplyDeleteMedieval literature had double purpose that is to teach and to delight. It was believed that humans are incapable of to act as individual, that all humans belonged to Catholic church which was expected them to believe and to follow what God has taught them. The literary pieces of Medieval age sought to make the humans believed in God just like the work of Dante Alghieri's Divine Comedy that has been influenced by church. He described what it is like to be in hell or he called Inferno, purgatory, and in heaven, so that the humans will not tend to make sins for them not to delivered to inferno.
As with the Contemporary Literature, I believed that Medieval Literature has a great factor on influencing the Contemporary literature nowadays in terms in Christianity.
Both Greek-Roman literature and medieval literature leave a great impact in the history of the world. But, of course, both of them have their own significant difference that makes one special. Greek-Roman literature focuses on epics that involve their gods and goddesses. Most of their literature uses mythological characters like Zeus, Hades, Athena, Aphrodite and their counterpart in Roman. While in Medieval literature, their epics contain courtly love, chivalry, revenge versus forgiveness, so many allegories and some of the pieces were influenced by the church. Medieval literature also doesn’t used mythological characters rather people from their history. I also noticed that both literature contain magical powers and stuff.
ReplyDeleteMedieval literature transcends time. The reason it's survived so many years, in so many forms, is that it's highly entertaining, and it speaks to a lot of our deepest desires as humans—the want for adventure, for romance, and to save and be saved. It also serves as a stepping stone to the famous literary pieces nowadays.
Contemporary literature is more realistic than Medieval literature but both of them are really influential to the people.
We all know that Roman literature is base on Greek literature it's just that they create their own version of it. just like the Greek Gods and Goddesses that has also a counter-part in Roman literature. While the Medieval literature, most of their epics have different themes; romance, chivalry, revenge or forgiveness, allegories and also the influence of church or religious matter.
ReplyDeleteMedieval literature brought a new history with their well-known epics and poets and also some of them are based on true story. A very entertaining epics that impact the whole world and that's why Medieval literature is one of the best. Their biggest contribution is the epics that change the world.
Modern literature is much well-known for our generation but for me, these two is very important to the people because it is part of our daily life. And medieval literature place an important role for the modern literature

ReplyDeleteAncient Greek and Roman Literature creates epics and and secular stories that includes Gods and Goddesses. Ancient Literature entailed Mythological characters such as Zues, Poseidon, Apollo, Aphrodite, Hera, Athena and different names but the same person in Roman. While in Medieval Literature, writers used either popular personalities or themselves as a characters in their works. Medieval Literature focused more on faith or faith-related because the were greatly influenced by the church. Some of their themes were romances, chivalries, revenge and forgiveness of the characters and ofcourse themes of allegorical epics or stories were popular back then.
ReplyDeleteOne of the greatest contribution of Medieval Literature in the evolution of Literature is development of writings in poetry or epics which attempts to provide entertainment, enlightenment, or instructions to the readers, listeners, and observer. It also affects the faith and beliefs of the people on their history that influenced thr people right now in how they communicate to others. It developed the literary techniques used in communication.
I believed that the Medieval Literature have greatly influenced the Modern or Contemporary Literature through their poems, epics and stories as well as affects in how they form and how they put a manner or themes they used in their works. Medieval Literature are grandly important in Modern writers, so must give importance to it.
In Greek and Roman literature, they have an epics which includes the gods and goddesses of their own times in where the gods of Greek has also a counter part in the gods of Roman. Some of the epics of Greek were being revised by the Roman where they used their own gods in the stories.
ReplyDeleteIn Medieval Literature it is the rebirth of all literature. They also made the different themes of their stories which is the allegory, romantic, revenge vs. forgiveness, chivalry and focus on the church. They were also trained to use the language of Medieval English in their works but some of them used their very own language in doing their own works or poets. The literature of this time was composed of religious writings as well as secular works. In this age, this is where all the languages and themes of the stories are enhanced for the future generation.
The improvements in Ancient to Medieval literature is that they have improves their themes, works, poems, and also their languages. They also provide entertainments and different kinds of lesson that the readers will surely adopt when they read they works. But their greatest contribution is that they also teach us about the church and also about God.
The ancient Greek-Roman literature and Medieval literature performs very important role in today's literature. These forms of literature had influence authors in different eras to create a wide variety of inspiration to their own stories. Myths, gods and goddesses were the subjects that was primarily discussed on the Greek-Roman Literature but there are still other themes or topics that was seen on the written works that are considered to be very good and to have lasting importance. While the themes on Medieval literature are mainly about chivalry, allegory, revenge or forgiveness, romance and church. Medieval literature shows that they were more cruel than Greek-Roman literature when it comes to punishments.
ReplyDeleteIn the Medieval Literature, the era's culture and traditions were shown in their literature, such as how creative and free the authors to their own stories. We could see that the authors that time had great imagination and ideas for coming up on different stories. For me these literary pieces at the present time wouldn't exist if it wasn't for the quality of the earlier literature
Modern literature deals with how people interact with each other nowadays. For me, Medieval and Contemporary literature are somehow the same because it both discusses the normal scenarios happening in that specific period of time.

ReplyDeleteIn comparison to Medieval Literatutre, Ancient Greek-Roman Literature focused more on their beliefs and culture. The works during this time always features their gods and goddesses, mythological creatures, and overly powerful heroes. Medieval Literature, however, is centered on the church. The poets and authors also used allegory and their stories are about chivalry, romance and revenge vs. forgiveness. Unlike Ancient literature, Medieval literature have knights-in-shining armor and damsels in distress as the stars of their stories. As I can see, there are improvements from Ancient literature to Medieval literature. One example is that Medieval literature have a wider variety of themes (like chivalry, allegorical, revemge vs forgiveness and romance) unlike Ancient literature that is focused on their culture and beliefs.
ReplyDeleteMedieval literature have contributed a lot to todays Literature. The era of Medieval literature is the era that inspired most of todays works and creative concepts. For example, the use of the concept of knights-in-shining armor and damsels in distress have been popular with some movies, especially those that have moral lessons and can be watched by children. Also, the themes of Medieval literature, specifically revenge vs. forgiveness and romance, are commonly used in the fiction novels that people read today.
For me, Modern literature is richer compared to Medieval literature. It is because Modern literature is like the result of all the previous eras of litearture combined. Through this, Modern literature have developed its own style. Also, compared to the Medieval literature where most of the authors use only Latin, Modern literature allows its authors to write in any language they are comfortable with.

ReplyDeleteThe literature of Greece was so important and remarkable and helped from the basis of modern European culture. The authors of ancient Greece left major legacies that included styles and themes of literature, mythologies, and histories. Consider, for a moment, how a lot of early medieval literature circulated orally. Back then, human stories were passed from mouth to mouth before being written down in manuscript. That’s how they got their epics.
The single greatest change between termed ancient literature and the Medieval literature was the rise of Christianity and the concomitant necessity to synthesize scriptural interpretation with more abstract philosophical theorizing. For me however, Greek tragedy, as well as Greek mythology, has always fascinated me. When I was younger, the Greek God’s always captured my interest, and I could never get enough of them. As I grew older, I became interested in the more refined aspects that Greek literature had to offer.
The contributions of Medieval literature to the evolution of literature is that early medieval literary works were hand written, and carefully illustrated by monks. Most books were bound. The literature of this time was composed of religious writings as well as secular works.
One of the oldest styles of literature is poetry. Specifically, epic poetry, which uses verses to tell a long story about hero. The Iliad and Odyssey tell stories that are part of history, part fiction, part mythodology but represent how the Greeks remembered their past and understood their world. They set standards for storytelling, such as the characteristics of a hero’s journey, that influence is to this day.
Basically, neither medieval and contemporary literature is of a piece that has their own wide variety of texts, critical philosophies which reflect the interdisciplinary nature of historical criticism
ReplyDeleteGreek – Roman and Medieval literature can be signified as legacies of their respective times and cultures. Each story, myth, poem and lyric from each period shows bits and pieces of their traditions and displays the way they think and act to the readers of today.
To compare these two periods, we must start from the inside out. Greeks and Romans were very superstitious people, and, as one way to put it, very hardcore. The Gods and Goddesses were eminent and superior in multiple stories. It would seem that many of the literature from this period are set where a God was a cause to a dilemma, or a dilemma was caused upon a God, if not, a God was strongly involved, and these were often made as cautionary tales. The most popular of these tales, Iliad and Odyssey, was a story of battle and adventure. Iliad, a story of war, and the background of this story states that the war was caused by some puerile drama between Gods. And Odyssey, a story of a man and his journey home, facing the obstacles brought upon him by Gods. Long story short, Greek-Roman literature is a role-playing game where a God holds the console. On the other hand, medieval literature is more on decoding, symbolisms, parables and theatrics. If the cause of a war in Greek-Roman literature is a God getting annoyed at exasperating mortals, medieval literature blames a woman because, well…because they’re women. And according to the authors from medieval times, being a woman is a good enough reason for you to be the blame.
Even with the patent anti-feminist propaganda exposed by medieval literature, it has not failed to influence the literature of the later periods up until now. The stereotypical damsel in distress and the knight in shining armour are often seen in many of today’s works, although things have taken a softer turn today. The crude humor and symbolism are very common, which were adopted from the medieval times.
In regards to the similarity of modern and medieval literature, I find them completely different. The themes of chivalry are rapidly vanishing, more and more people see now that the view on women at that time is wrong and unethical. The war and battles have gone a bit less intense at our current period, but that’s just to adapt to our society now. In my opinion, I think our current literature can be considered as an improvement compared to that of the medieval time. But, there is no doubt we would have reached our peak of writing if it were not for the progress they have made before us and how we adapted to theirs through time.

Comparing Ancient Greek and Roman Literature to Medieval Literature, Greek and Roman Literature have focused more on Gods and Goddesseswhile the latter is centered on Christianity. Medieval Literature, I think, has increased depth. Rather than just having your moral on a story, medieval literatures have allegories or symbolisms inside the story as well.
ReplyDeleteNo doubt Medieval Literature contributed to the evolution of literature as with the allegory which makes it interesting (it amazed me), revenge over forgiveness plot line which gives the story the excitement factor (like in most dramas), and the fact that it is centered in Christianity, makes it some kind of ‘controversial.
Lastly, Contemporary Literature is a mix of different other literature as a great period of time had passed by but Medieval literature of course greatly contributed to our Contemporary Literature which makes me think that both are still amazing and as influential as the other. - Fabrique, Carla :D
Ancient Greek engaged great emphasis on their literature and it is believed that the literary tradition of the western countries began there, starting with the Homeric epics. The Greeks were also the ones that were responsible for the development and growth of drama, tragedy and comedy in which, up until today are still used as a theme by a lot of poets, writers, novelist and playwrights. Roman Literature is somehow similar to the Greek literature having also, those beliefs about gods and goddesses. Although it is said that the Roman Literature started when a roman viewer was able to see a Greek play. Roman Literature often copies epic formats or normally translates Greek epics. An example of this is the Saturnian which was written by Adronicus. Saturnian is actually Homer’s Odyssey that was translated to a Latin old verse.
ReplyDeleteSo much for the Ancient Greek – Roman Literature, in comparison to these two, Medieval Literature focuses on the dark ages of the western culture and civilization. It was also made appealing to the teachings of the church because in medieval period, the church was a big and powerful institution. It is also said that literatures made in this period were considered as pure love, idealistic, and platonic.
The Medieval literature, of course, made great contributions to the evolution of our modern literature. It provided a lot of information and facts about the lives of middle ages people, how their traditions and beliefs greatly affected their way of living and how they wrote epics and classical literature. The Medieval literature has a lot of contributions but its most significant contribution is that it inspired a lot of writers of today’s literature or of the contemporary literature. There are many popular novels and epics that were inspired and are based in some medieval works. So basically, contemporary literature wouldn’t exist without ancient and medieval literature or maybe it would exist but in a different way. Because as I’ve said a lot of contemporary literature were established based on the early ideas, traditions, beliefs and literature of the medieval literature.

In Ancient Greek Literature, it focused more on epics and poetry that deals with myths, mythological creatures, traditions, and their culture. Most of their literary pieces include gods and goddesses as the characters where in they have a counterpart just like the poets of Greek in Roman; it basically means that Roman Literature was based on Greek's but it also covered comedies, tragedies, and satires. As for the Medieval Literature, it is widely influenced by the church because it played a greatest role during the medieval age. Medieval Literature has a variety of themes such as allegory, romance (specifically courtly love), revenge versus forgiveness, and chivalry. Unlike the Greek-Roman's literary pieces, theirs were composed of religious and secular pieces. The authors and the poets themselves are their own character in their works, just like Dante Allighierie's The Divine Comedy. Medieval Literature has given the greatest contribution in world's literature. Without this, we wouldn't be able to have a more improved literature nowadays. It has taught lessons about God, churches and others that remained important and left a great impact in our literature most especially in the contemporary literature.
ReplyDeleteLiterature had always been one of the foundations of life. Humans make these in order to put emphasis on topics as well as beliefs and experiences in their lifetime. Although there are many differences between the Ancient Greek-Roman Literature and Medieval Literature we can’t deny the fact that these gave the basic foundation needed in order to improve our today’s literature. With Ancient Greek-Roman literature, it focuses mainly on tragedies based on heroic and legendary themes of the past. It evolves from philosophical and historical to tragedies, comedies and histories of their battles and war. Another trait that is highly noticed is that their stories are of humans against gods and goddess like Zeus/Jupiter, Poseidon/Neptune, Hades/Pluto, Athena/Minerva etc. They are common for having a god or goddess as their enemy. They travel, alter their fate even if they know that it’s futile or do something to prove their worth and power. The plots are really simple but there is bloodshed like the Oedipus trilogy for example. Although it’s simple we can still witness death upon death, violence even to those to whom they owed love and loyalty. As for the medieval literature, it revolves around the Roman Catholic Church. The gods from the ancient literature are gone. They only honor one and the idea of underworld (the place where all the dead souls travel or resides) is changed into parts like the heaven and hell as well as the purgatory which the humans created out of hope.
ReplyDeleteThere are so many improvements that can be seen if one compared a literature from the ancient Greek-Roman to a medieval literature. One is that it’s not that simple anymore. You can’t challenge a god just because you think you’re much better, wiser or powerful than him/her. There are themes present now like revenge vs. forgiveness, romance, chivalries, courtly love and allegories. It’s much deeper than before although there are still stories of heroic experiences. There are still characters that are in dire situations but this time it’s more enigmatic than the ones from the ancient Greek-Roman. The greatest contribution of medieval literature to the evolution of literature is the new writing styles. They began topics about love, forgiveness and revenge which are popular topics of today’s modern literature. Modern literature and medieval literature may be different but I can say that at par at some part because authors of today’s time improve drastically with their techniques. It’s not the same with the depth of the plot and the role of religion is not that popular in literatures today so it’s sometimes considered unimportant. Medieval literature was their foundation on showing their faith to God. But I can proudly say that our literature is on par with the medieval literature because it still catches the interest of people.
Greek-Roman literature emphasizes mythologies and epics about the different gods and goddesses such as Poseidon, Zeus, Hades, Athena, Aphrodite, Apollo, Ares, and many more. It also tackles epics about their adventures which also have different themes but most of the stories involve the concept of fate in which they can’t change. In the other hand, Medieval literature focuses on 5 major themes such as allegory, chivalry, romance, revenge and forgiveness, and influenced by the church. Medieval literature works, unlike Greek-Roman literature works, did not use mythological characters for they are already introduced to Christianity.
ReplyDeleteMedieval literature defined the English language as we know it. Early books were being hand-copied and illustrated by monks unlike the Ancient literature, which are passed through generations orally. During the Medieval time, many people, are again, write and learning different styles of writing. Literature exploded as people began to write poetic fiction.
As for the Contemporary literature, for me, it is more developed than Medieval for it has already passed through generations and as we all know, Medieval literature focused on some themes unlike Contemporary literature. Nevertheless, both of them are influential.

ReplyDeleteAs the evolution of men came they learned how to write there forth creating Literature for the utmost reason, Entertainment. As to what I can say about the difference of Ancient Greek - Roman Literature with Medieval Literature is that , first and fore most Ancient Greek - Roman Literature does not have much difference since the Romans copied the works of the Greeks and have made their own versions hence improving it. Mainly their literature tackles about their Gods, how they would worship and give them praise during that times. Also has mythological creatures such as Minotaurs , Centaurs, and Cyclops. Their literature shares a mixed taste of Fantasy with Religiousness. Focuses on Mythology, from then on you can know that it is just pure fantasm. Writers and Poets during that era had vast imaginative minds.
ReplyDeleteAs for Medieval Literature, you can see some changes to how literature proceeded and has taken another stepping stone because literature at this era no longer concentrates on Gods and creatures that did not exist in our world or so they say. It now circles around what humans do and what they are capable of. More on religion, no not Gods, just purely religion and church. I believe that somehow racism started at this era, I don't know but that's just me. People became aware of what the world has to offer them and no longer feared the wrath of Gods and what nots. Medieval Literature tells a lot about allegory, romance, revenge and forgiveness, chivalry and focus on the church, It shows more on heroism.
Yes. Simply because reading literature from Ancient Greek- Roman to Medieval shows you that slowly, people became more aware of worldly problems. Forgetting that somehow there is a God above, that they can't move up without doing something about their challenges, solving their problems; be it hook or by crook. Humans saw more of reality and what money and power is capable of doing. Even so this is shown on the Ancient Greek-Roman Era though it is not focused enough on that. Men slaughtered for the sake of power and riches.
Medieval Literature became the starting points of what we have today. On how our lives go and ends in the present. It's greatest contributions is the stories that were written during that time,we can get knowledge from them, knowing how they were during those times and what are their views amidst the events.
Contemporary Literature is the developed Medieval Literature. It has greatly affected the present literature. It has became it's basis to how things are now. As you can see if you read the literature of today, you can see bits of the Medieval Literature because of the fact that it has become its stepping stone for a more refined version. Still mainly concentrates now on how reality is and worldly desires.
Literature is any written work. Ancient Greek – Roman Literature is different from Medieval Literature. Both literatures have their own themes that create variation between them. Ancient Greek – Roman Literature examines mythology, epic and lyrical poetry, dramas (tragedy and comedy), and pastorals while Medieval Literature examines the influence of the church on the society, chivalry, revenge and forgiveness, allegories, and courtly love. Most works on the Medieval Literature shows the great influence of the church while Ancient Greek – Roman Literature is more focused on mythology. Ancient Greek – Roman Literature and Medieval Literature have semblance too. Both came from different places from different people. They mirror the culture and tradition of the place where they originated. They represent the opinions and feelings of the author concerning a certain topic. They also tell us about some things that most likely occurred in the past.
ReplyDeleteImprovements from Ancient to Medieval Literature are pretty obvious. One of the greatest improvements is the themes. Every period of literature has their own themes that make them distinct among other periods. The way of writing also changed; more ways and forms of writing emerged as the time goes by. The way literature is passed on to the next generation also changed; before, literature is passed down orally, now, they are written and recorded so that they won’t be lost, forgotten, or altered by some people who has no right to do such a thing because they don’t have reliable sources and no permission from the author to change it.
In my own opinion, the greatest contribution of medieval literature to the evolution of literature in general is it showed people what it is like to live in the Middle Ages. They provided information on what might have happened in the past. They gave out ideas that still influence some of today’s literary pieces. They served as stepping stones to reach the highest and richest peak of literature.
I can say that Modern Literature is at par with Medieval Literature. Modern Literature is a new form of literature that combines all form of pre-existing literature that it can relate to the events that are taking place in modern times. Modern Literature started when people started to express themselves. They changed what they write to reflect what is happening around them. Modern Literature is a form of Medieval Literature with a few changes and more additions to state more clearly what writers want to tell.
There are significant changes that happened during the transition period between Greco-Roman literature and Medieval literature. Of course one of these examples is the central topics tackled by the literary piece. During the Greco-ROman perios everything was basically focused on each of their own mythology and centered on obviously mythical creatures like imps and fairies, while the medieval age literature focused on more serious topics like redemption and chivalry. Another change that happened was the tone that these pieces took. While Greco-Roman literature was more on light-heartedness and suffering (an interesting contrast, by the way), Medieval Age Literature took on a more serious tone, showing a dark tone on mortality and, also, suffering.
ReplyDeleteI could also say that Medieval Age literature is essential to the evolution of literature itself because it provided ideologies and concepts still widespread these days, like Purgatory and knighthood. Lastly, Medieval literature can be considered at par with contemporary literature because of their two opposing core ideals. While contemporary literature is all about finding yourself and liberated ideas, Medieval Age literature is all about conservative ideas posed by religious doctrines and anti-feminism. That is all.
The Roman and Greek Literature focuses on gods and goddesses or beliefs. While the medieval literature focuses on romance, revenge, chivalry, allegory and religion or religious beliefs. Some of the stories of the Roman and Greek literature tells a story of a hero or heroine who embarks on a journey and they will then did something great. The Medieval literature on the other hand, some stories here, are based on true life.
ReplyDeleteYes, there are significant improvements from Ancient Literature to Medieval Literature. In medieval literature, you will get more moral lessons and it is more meaningful and awesome than ancient literature. I mean, the stories, their so wonderful and fun to read and not so boring and has more actions than Ancient literature.
The greatest contributions of the Medieval literature to the evolution of literature, are the moral lessons that we get from them and the histories that we learned from them. And of course, some beliefs we have up until now because of their stories. And some stories on our era are inspired by Medieval literature. So they give us ideas on the stories that we write. :D
Yes, I think Medieval literature and Modern Literature have some things in common. For example, the themes of the stories on the Modern literature are the same on the stories of the Medieval Literature. Plus, the stories in Modern Literature are inspired by the Medieval Literature.
Ancient Greek - Roman Literature and Medieval Literature differs in so many aspects. Ancient Greek and Roman Literary pieces are mostly myths or epics. Their story focuses on mythological characters such as Zeus, Hades, Aphrodite, Poseidon Mercury, Venus, Jupiter and etc. Themes of their stories are mostly tragedy and comedy. On the other hand, Medieval Literature focuses on the church. Most of their stories are connected with the teachings of their church. Different types of writings are also shown such as: religious, secular, women’s literature and allegory. Though they have differences, each of them has similarities. Ancient Greek and Roman Literature and Medieval Literature both show their culture, beliefs and traditions in their stories. By doing these, the readers can easily explore and know the true meaning of the literary pieces.
ReplyDeleteMedieval Literature showed us some religious aspects that we may not know and might help us in our lives. It brought us new literary pieces that we can share to each of us. These literary pieces such as: Beowulf, Nibelungenlied and Song of Roland are just some of their literary pieces in which we can get lessons or familiarity in the happening in our lives.
Medieval Literature is at par with Contemporary Literature. Medieval Literature’s focus or themes are mostly about religion or the church. Contemporary Literature is like developed or improved Medieval Literature. Both of them are complex and rich field of study, from the utterly sacred to the exuberantly profane and touching all points in-between.
To start of, both of them are exemplified in history as a huge stepping stone that paved the way for the literature we know now. These are two of the most influential "genres" of literature that we should know about. As for the Ancient Greek-Roman literature, this was centered of focused on their, per say, gods and goddesses. They are based mostly on the heroics and deeds that their "idols" do, or did. They perceive them as the highest of the high, some the lowest of the low. This was, in my opinion, their way of worshiping or thanking their respective gods and goddesses. On the contrary, Medieval literature is centered mainly on the Church. (From that statement we can definitely say that they are 'contradicting', in one way or another.) This focuses on love, romance, heroics of people (though 'magic' is still used), chivalry and other stuff. In my personal view, Medieval Literature was perceived as a way of objectifying women. Well my say is, it does not. Though, some stories DO perceive women as, well, helpless. But, as they do say, behind a great man is an even greater woman.
ReplyDeleteAs for improvements? Huge. Well, the way the stories were written in the Ancient times were actually refined during the Medieval period. Also, huge differences can be clearly seen and read, from the way of telling the stories and the way it was written, to the contents of the stories itself.
Medieval literature was a huge leap in the field of literature in general, in the sense of, well, genres, style, way of telling the stories. Well, to sum it all up, almost every aspect of literature was refined and enhanced by the Medieval period.
This is a question that I really pondered on (not really). The answer is very, very, simple: No. Yes, our Modern literature can entice many readers. Yes, it can have a very complex story-line. But, never, never-ever can our modern literature be as complex and as sophisticated as the Medieval's. I mean, who could come up in our time the content that Dante's Inferno could bring? That literary piece alone could trump out other literary pieces in a blink of an eye. And, do know that Medieval writers came up with their own unique style of writing and exemplifying heroic deeds.Compared to the Modern style, which is actually well, mainstream. That's why I commend the people who are had written in the Medieval times. I do like them very much. :)
Well, that is all. This is well, my unbiased say upon the given questions. Thank you for reading :)
-Pierre Pioquid
Ancient Greek and Roman Literature include tragedies, comedies, myths, epics, poetry. Both focused on their different literary piece involving their god and goddesses and other magical creatures, which is more likely based on their superstition, beliefs and culture. Medieval Literature on that time is Catholic Church centered which includes themes such as allegorical, chivalry, romantic, and revenge vs. forgiveness. Unlike Ancient Greek and Roman, Medieval literature somehow involves knight in shining armor fighting for their lovely maidens, which is more likely based on some historical events in different countries in Europe. Most of their literary pieces are allegory while in Greek and Roman is tragedy. For me, Medieval Literature has the most creative works and ideas that I have encountered. Medieval Literature has been a great inspiration for some authors and their works nowadays. The theme Romantic of Medieval Literature became popular and used by many authors to catch readers especially children and teenagers who love the idea of a “Princess being saved by a Prince” or “Happily Ever after”.
ReplyDeleteAncient Greek-Roman Literature and Medieval Literature has a lot of differences despite of their literary piece and Works.
ReplyDeleteIn ancient greek-roman literature, it is mostly focused on mythological stories and epics which they include Gods and Goddesses as their main character like Zeus,Aphrodite,Hades and Poseidon. While on Medieval Literature,There are characterisics and themes that can be recognized in their works which is influenced by a church,Allegorikal which is also known as "extended metaphors",Romance,Revenge vs.Forgiveness and Chivalry. In medieval literature some literary piece has some famous characters like homer like in the piece of dante's alighieri "Divine Comedy".
The greatest contribution of medieval Literature in the evolution of literature is one of their themes which is 'Influenced by a church'". I think is it because Medieval Literature teached us to believe in God and to have fear on him. Based on Dante's Alighieri work"Divine Comedy ",This piece describes the hell or inferno, purgatory and paradise which may we encounter after our death. It includes circles of sins and each circle has an equivalent punishment.Until now,We people doesnt want to have sins so that we will not go to hell and experience that kind of punishment.
Both contemporary literature and medival literature has a great influencial works but i think medieval literature has a great impact because it has a high factor in influencing Christianity to people than contemporary literature.
In Ancient Greek-Roman Literature, it is mainly about epics and myths, talking about the gods/godesses that manipulate humans or punishes the for their wrong doings. In Medieval Literature, it focuses on the themes such as chivalry, revenge and forgiveness, allegory, and religion or the church. Well, both of them have the concept of love, however, in Medieval Literature, women has this bad image and is often the antagonists or the one that has the bad aura in the story.
ReplyDeleteYes, there are significant improvements from Ancient to Medieval Literature. In Ancient Literature their are limited in the themes beacause it revolves around the gods/godesses while in the Medieval Literature, it covers everything especially those that reflect in their society.
I think that the greatest contributions of Medieval Literature is its themes. It is where we can get life or moral lessons but it doesn't mean that the Ancient Literature isn't the same. Yes, in Ancient Literature they do teach us moral lessons, however, in Medieval Literature, it uses allegories to emphasize what the story tries to impart to us.
I do think that Modern or Contemporary Literature is at par with Medieval Literature. I can say that Medieval Literature is the base or foundation of the Modern or Contemporary Literature beacuse the themes that were used in Medieval Literature were enriched and was used up until now, which is part of the Modern Literature especially courtly love. It was a common genre for literature. These themes help the story to have a smooth flow and it gives colors and spices to the stories. :D

First of all is the Greek-Roman Literature. The stories and other literature works here was so fascinating because most of these works focuses on mythologies which are basically about gods and goddesses. Some literary pieces focuses on heroism and bravery. Here also rises the dawn of drama. Drama was one of the main topics that was used in every literary pieces which impact audience very much.
ReplyDeleteSecond is the Medieval Literature. Works here are basically have the main topic of religion. Theological works in this period were dominant and were famous. It imapcted many people through this topic. For example, Dante alighieri's Divine Comedy who influenced many people and many perspectives.
Both of these literature made a huge impact to the past and present people. They were great and wonderful yet made us think of the events that happen on that period. They convey many type of events which they knew could make an imapct to the present people.
Yes. There is a sognificant improvement. Greek- Roman Literature focuses on the gods and goddesses right? Based on this, it was explored more and defined well on the medival period but changing the theory of having too many gods and goddesses. They made only One God which is the creator according to the pieces that was written. It changed the theory to make it more realistic and more believable than the past theories.

ReplyDeleteAncient Greek - Roman Literature and Medieval Literature have both focused upon their surroundings, upon how their society have worked at that period of time thereby portraying the social traditions, etiquette, and cultures granting us windows for looking back revealing the undying system of men; their familiar approach to similar situations such as being brought forth to challenges that uplifts our innermost passion that has always been deeply rooted within the hearts of humanity from the very beginning and the demons that will take advantage of us at times that we are weakest and most vulnerable to convince us to commit the unthinkable. All the morals that have and will always be depicted by the characters from most if not all the literature in history.
ReplyDeleteAlthough Ancient and Medieval Literature's characters react the same way any regular person is expected to react, their stories vary among the main issues they face on that period. For example: In Ancient Literature, there will always be a character that will possess mystical abilities and powers of at least be related to a supernatural being like the gods and goddesses, after all, they are more on beliefs or myths. Medieval Literature on the other hand will most likely portray their society; their traces of acts against women; the way the government of the church take charge of everything from cultures to daily routine activities; and even how politicians were thought of and seen as.
As much as i could recall, the Medieval Period was also known as the Dark ages for the numerous unrighteous activities that arose there. Literature had always had the power to enlighten people, and at this point, people could have been awaken from imprisonment by the government and being able to revolutionize the unjust system of their time. The Medieval Literature could have contributed to the evolution of Literature by changing the way people from the past think and perceive things.
We could say that Contemporary Literature is at par with Medieval Literature in the way that both focus mainly upon the systems that surrounds them, like making satirical stories that were made solely for the people, mostly politicians or simply those with more power than others, who commit unlawful acts. But we could also say that Contemporary differ from Medieval by the topics that they tackle as one issue faced by the people is dealt with, another will arise.
The Ancient Greek and Roman Literature are both focuses on the Greek and Roman Mythologies which are related to the Gods and Goddesses. Most of their themes are all about heroism of a God/Goddesses. Their works are more on comedies and tragedies. In Medieval Literature, their works are influenced by the church and their themes are of the following: Romantic, Chivalry, Anti feminism, Revenge and Forgiveness and the most important theme is Allegory because all of its works are alegorical and religious or secular. Yes, there is a significant improvement because we'll believe that their works are true and it'll happened in our lives and for the Gods and Goddesses in the Ancient Greek and Roman Literature, we'll believe that they actually exist in some people but for knowing the gods and goddesses, we have our own god that creates all of us. In Medieval Literature, we can say that their works are quite impressive and entertaining and these works can be happened in some other countries. Like the theme revenge and forgiveness and romantic, they'll fight for their love and avenge them for what they have done. Like in the story "The Nibelungenlied", Kriemhild's wife Siegfried died because of Hagen so she will avenge for the death of her wife. Just like that and it also happens in real life and in some fictional stories.
ReplyDeleteThere are big differences between the transition of Ancient Greek-Roman literature and Medieval literature. Greek-Roman literature shows the culture of Ancient Rome and Greece that emphasizes the early poetry, comedy, history and tragedy. It mainly focuses about mythologies that represents gods and goddesses. They also emphasize the literature that were written by famous poets like Homer, Aesop, Euripides, Horace, and Virgil. This affects the literary tradition of Western parts. Medieval literature focuses on the period of middle ages, which is said to be passed by one generation to another that is told by bards. It has different themes such as influenced by the church, chivalry, allegorical, revenge vs. forgiveness, and romance.
ReplyDeleteYes, there are significant improvements of Ancient to Medieval literature. We adopt the concepts of different literature for our way to help give improvements about this. Ancient literature shows the development of writing the earliest text while Medieval literature shows religious writings as well as secular works.
Modern literature is at par with Medieval literature. These types of literature shows developments that were as the same genres that were still used today. They both show different genres and issues but they are in line with this same point of behavior in different period of time.

The Greek and Roman Literature are almost the same.
ReplyDeleteAncient Greeks and Roman Literature are showing the different contribution
and influences of the unrealistic power and abilities of the different
Gods and Goddesses. Their influence on the people, how they praise them
and how they affect the people's daily lives.
As for the Medieval Literature, It mainly shows the relationship of the
religion and the people. The strong influence of the church in the decisions
of the people. One example of this is the effect on the people of one of the greatest
novel, Dante's The Divine Comedy that scares the HELL out of sinners in that time.
Now,how can I compare this to the Modern Literature? Well, modern literature discusses
a lot of topics about Love, Mischief, friendship, family and a lot of fantasies. Unlike before that
the Ancient Literature teaches moral lessons to their readers.

ReplyDeleteLiteratures are written works, especially those considered of superior or lasting artistic merit. Roman literature and the Medieval literature are two of the most known literature in history because of their style and impact on the society, both of them have different characteristics on how they let themselves become known in history.
Roman literature, The Roman literature are written in Latin, the body of written works in the Latin language, remains an enduring legacy of the culture of ancient Rome. Most of their works are according to the tradition of other cultures, like the literary tradition of Greece wherein they use Gods and Goddesses in their literary. Two of the best known literary works in the Roman literature was the Illiad and Odyssey, these two literary had the one of the biggest impact in the Roman Literature.
Medieval Literature, there had been a significant change in the era of Medieval literature, they focused on church and love related themes because of the religion of the people back then. We can see how different the writers thought back then because of their comparison in their literature, because of their works they had contributed fresh new genres in history. These genres can be seen in their everyday life, it inspired writers in the 21st century to make this kind of stories. We can say that the modern literature is in par with the medieval literature because of how the medieval literature inspired the modern literature. Most of the works nowadays have the same genre as they did in the medieval times, without the medieval literature the modern literature wouldn’t have been as exciting as it is today.
Ancient Greek Literature reflects Greek’s and Roman’s Tradition and Culture. As what you can observe in their Literary pieces, it involves Supernatural characters such as Gods and Goddesses from whom they believe in. Some Ancient Greek Authors also have their own Heroine and hero that serves as their fictional resemblance and the main protagonists of their stories. Ancient Greek Literature was written in Latin as Romans conquered the Greeks, where Romans transformed Greek Mythology to their own version (Roman mythology).
ReplyDeleteMedieval Literature on the other hand, contains themes such as Romance, Chivalry, Revenge and Forgiveness and is sometimes Allegorical . Most Literary pieces in this era are influenced by the church because they considered it as their central institution and most of the scholars were members of the clergy. Unlike Ancient Greek Literature, Medieval Literature was written in Old English and doesn’t include Gods and Goddesses as their main characters though it still includes supernatural beings.
Medieval Literature is important and made a huge impact because it gave people knowledge on what early communities look like, what traditions and cultures are present before, and or what occurrence might have happened which contributed to the transition of Literature. Medieval literature also gave us ideas and new themes which are still widely used by authors around the world.
Literature is somehow known to leave an impact to readers through several forms of writings. It refers to any written and spoken material done. These became more useful as society and time has passed on. Greek and Roman Literature, one of the known literature, for me ain't differs. Rome had an influence from Greece particularly on their tradition.
ReplyDeleteAncient Greek - Roman Literature basically talks mostly about myths where gods and goddesses where used. War is also one idea of Ancient Literature where dedication and courage of the antagonist can be portrayed. Medieval Literature merely focuses on real life situations which can be suitable for every human being with problem against a belief. Religion can be also discussed in Medieval Literature.
Significant improvements from Ancient Literature to Medieval Literature can be clearly seen through their works. For me, the way they write turned into somehow an individual with poor vocabulary can understand and put her foot into the shoes of the antagonist.
I can say that the greatest contribution of the Medieval Literature to the evolution of Literature is the knowledge they’ve imparted particularly on humane society.
I think Contemporary Literature is partly of the Medieval Literature because of mixed ideas covered.

The Ancient Greek - Roman Literature, the conquered and the conquerers, focuses mainly about their gods and their goddesses wherein it tackles the early Greek and Roman mythology that symbolizes supernatural characters which possess mythical powers as their representations. Its important theme is heroism because it shows a person in the story which has the qualities of being a hero or a heroine that has exceptional courage and bravery when danger awaits; for example, the story entitled "The Gorgon's Head" shows a great heroism of Perseus in which he wasn't afraid when he battled against Medusa no matter how tough the monster or the situation can be as long as he has the will to fight and to strive. The Ancient Greek - Roman Literature shows the early history of the nature and the origins of the world as well as its religious and beliefs; because of that, it has its own originality, diversity of talent, intellectual quality, essentially full of artistry as well as permanence and universality. It is influenced by its ritual, traditions and cultures that characterizes famous philosophers like Socrates and Virgil and resembles other features such as tragedy and comedy. It is primarily concerned with politics and morality wherein it either gives us a gift or a lesson based on a certain story. On the other hand, Medieval Literature is influenced by the church that was the central institution in the medieval period. Its important themes are composed of allegory which is an extended metaphor, romantic which comes from the word "Roman Language", revenge and forgiveness which revolves around the protagonist, chivalry which describes an anti-feminist view, and focus on the church which mainly derived by the priest. It is often concerned with its society and shows the revolution that happened during middle ages.
ReplyDeleteSome significant improvement from Ancient to Medieval Literature include changes from prehistoric writings to modern writings as well as the evolution of literature wherein it is affected by the history from one generation to another. As time goes by, most people adapt their culture and beliefs during the middle ages when religions like Christians were passed onto another state. For me, the greatest contributions of Medieval Literature were the language used as part of our communication and the literary techniques that pertain to style, character, and theme because these factors can not only contribute either in religious or secular writings, but it also provides and gives entertainment as the plot thickens and begins to twist 'till our mind blows up.
Although Medieval Literature had happened during the medieval period of middle ages, Modern Literature nowadays is still at par with Medieval Literature. It's mainly because of the themes like romance, allegory and the literary techniques that are often used in Modern Literature; similar to the written works of Medieval Literature, Modern Literature has a variety of works which include folktales, lyric and epic poetry, short story, and legends that have the same characteristics of medieval works. Also, Modern Literature is a part of Medieval Literature because it gathers some thoughts that derived from it in spite of the evolution and history of the literature. Yet they both differ in many ways too. I cannot say they are exactly the same, but they're still at par. In other words, these two literatures distinctly match and is constant to one another. Sometimes Modern Literature may try to change the development of Medieval Literature and come up with unique and meaningful ways. Thus, fantasy novels and science fiction stories are born.

Greek Literature, which dates from the early 5th c. B.C. and continues in a traceable tradition to the end of the 4th c. B.C. (after which it becomes what we call Hellenistic, with far greater output apparently based on decreasing talent), was known to the Romans as early as the 3 rd. c. B.C., when they began to read, translate and imitate the works of the established and famous Greek literary masters. Greek literature in every period is a dominating force for the Roman writers, the mark of Hellenic thought and myth is ever-present in the Roman mind, and in many ways it is suitable to speak of the "Greco-Roman experience" in literature and the arts, since the Romans fused everything they did with what the Greeks had done centuries before.
ReplyDeleteEnglish Medieval literature had, so far as we know, no existence until Christian times of the Dark Ages when Latin was the language of English literature. English Medieval literature was not written. It is was passed by word of mouth from one generation to another by English, Welsh and Irish bards. The origins of the stories about King Arthur and the Arthurian Legend are found in many Welsh legends and Celtic Myths which were told by the Bards who therefore contributed to Medieval literature.
Medieval literature has been hugely influential in modern popular culture. Pretty much any sword-and-sorcery adventure ultimately descends from this period, and even some works you wouldn't think of bear its subtle traces. Let's get medieval on a few examples, shall we?
Here's a somewhat subtle case of medieval inspiration: Twilight. What's Twilight other than a modern-day re-hashing of the Lancelot-Arthur-Guinevere love triangle…

Greek and Roman Literature are almost the same. Although Greek literature remains only a relatively small proportion survives. Yet it remains important to Greeks because it serves as a testimonial on how their culture is really creative and colorful.
ReplyDeleteWhen Romans conquer Greece they copy all the literature but they revised it on their own and make it more creative than the Greeks.
The significant improvement from Ancient Literature to Medieval Literature can be seen through their works. Because as the time passed by every people change perspective and beliefs so they reflect their feelings through their work.
Modern Literature nowadays is still at par with Medieval Literature. It's mainly because of the themes like romance that are often used in Modern Literature as entertainment similar to the written works of Medieval Literature. Modern Literature may try to change the development of Medieval Literature and come up with unique and gives more entertainment. And fantasy, novels, short stories and science fiction stories are born that all people really love to read. And also the medieval literature can be considered as an institution to modern literature because these medieval literature can serve as knowledgeable literature that can be use nowadays.
